Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health awareness month.png

If you’re a client at Poppy, you know that we’re serious about self care. What you may not know is that to us, the most important form of self care is protecting our mental health. Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to highlight some of the products and services that are not only good for us physically, but help to bring balance to us mentally, as well.

One of the easiest forms of self care and taking  care of our mental health is to get good, quality sleep. However, in this day and age with phones and apps and lives that never seem to pause, it’s tough to even get enough sleep, let alone quality sleep. Poppy is proud to carry products that work with your body to help you achieve a restful night of zzz’s.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

This beautiful blend of herbs is all natural, with no after effects of sleep medication. Valerian Root, which is known for having sleep-inducing qualities, mixes with Skullcap, which helps to calm the nervous system. The result? Sweet (uninterrrupted) Dreams!

Yuyo Botanics-Full Spectrum Formula

300mg extract combined with MCT oil is perfect for combating the day to day stresses of life. This formula contains a trace amount of both CBN (for aches and pains) and CBG (awesome for inflammation and pain relief). Taken under the tongue, this hemp mixture will be the perfect partner for keeping anxiety under control!

LotusWei Quiet Mind

This blend helps to calm a busy mind and ease physical tension while magnifying a relaxed body and sound sleep. With a fresh herbal scent, it’s great for both clarity and calmness.

Quiet Mind comes in three forms: an aura spray for the head, neck, and shoulders, an elixir to be taken internally, and as an anointing oil, which can be used on pulse points or mixed in with your favorite massage oil.

While we know sleep is vital to mental health and overall well being, we aren’t always aware of the day to day anxiety that can overwhelm us. Luckily our shop is full of items that can help to bring balance to the craziness of our days and remind us to take a break and breathe.

We understand that everyone takes care of their mental health differently, and we are so grateful that many of you choose Poppy as your happy place. Here are a couple services best known for giving us a sense of calm and respite from our busy lives.

Massage

Massage can be so beneficial to our mental health. Research shows that massage can help to affect the biochemistry of the body in a positive way, thus helping to treat both depression and anxiety. Combining the positive mental aspects along with relaxation and muscle repair, a 60 or 90 minute customizable massage at Poppy can be just what you need!

Reiki Therapy with Crystal Chakra Balancing

Reiki is known for healing through breath work and hand placement. It can bring about feelings of relaxation and calmness. Many people have found that reiki work has helped with emotional release, bringing about more feelings of groundedness and tranquility to life. When allowing that to be coupled with the balancing of our chakras, we can bring about deep inner healing for our entire system, which in turn releases physical, emotional, and mental stress.

Chan’Beaute Reflexology Facial

Reflexology has both physical and mental benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety. This is a therapeutic facial using tools that help bring about healthy skin by correcting the internal imbalances. Using reflexology tools, your service provider will be able to activate internal organs and release any physical and emotional blocks held in the body.

Gua Sha Facial

This beautiful facial is well known in traditional Chinese medicine. With the use of gemstones to lift and sculpt the face, lymphatic fluid is broken down as well. Your service provider will be able to break up any muscle tension and improve the flow of blood and nutrients to the skin. This facial also unlocks the energetic meridians, helping with stress and naturally bringing about glowing skin. A Thai Polutice of beautiful, calming herbs is used to help break up any tension and reduce inflammation, allowing you to fully relax and feel an overwhelming sense of calming energy.

Mental health is so much more than products and services, and we never want to take away from the importance of reaching out for help if needed. Therapy has been beneficial to many of us here at Poppy, and there is no shame in that.  We believe strength comes from allowing ourselves to be open and vulnerable about the struggles that come along with being human. We hope you’ll join us in ending the stigma that comes along with speaking about Mental Health.

You are never alone, and you are always worthy.

Meet our Salon Director, Cassie!

Tell us a little bit about yourself & your background?

I'm a 2 on the Enneagram so really, I'd prefer to be asking about you, not me! I grew up in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago with my parents and five younger siblings. I've lived in Nashville for three years, but I've dreamed of living here since I was little. I'm a complete bookworm and always have a book in my purse, a book in my car, and about five next to my bed. Writing is my passion and I've been so lucky to be able to incorporate it into so many aspects of my life. I'm constantly curious and I love hard, both of which have gotten me into trouble! I love country music, have an unswerving loyalty to Taylor Swift, and prefer camping to a fancy hotel. It's important to me that people know they matter, and I do my best to leave each person I meet a little more loved than I found them. Before I moved to Nashville I lived in the tiniest town in South Georgia and if I ever leave here, you can probably find me there, living life slow and steady on a porch swing!

What is something that would surprise us about you?

Well, I'm not a very surprising person, to be honest. I love routine. I guess a pretty defining aspect of my life is that I'm adopted. It's shaped a lot of who I am, and it tends to surprise people when I tell them. I've also run multiple half marathons and used to write for an online aspect of the Chicago Tribune, where some of my writing went viral!

What do you love most about clean beauty?

If I'm being honest, I had to change my mind frame a bit regarding clean beauty because I know what an investment it can be! I had to stop looking at it as indulgent and start understanding what a beautiful act of self care it is and how it effects every aspect of my life and health. I've been so lucky to learn about the education behind each brand. Seeing the intent behind each woman's products has given me the opportunity to look at my skin care routine differently. It's now a chance to show myself and my skin and body the love it deserves for carrying me through the day. As women we are so incredibly tough on ourselves, and the ritual of removing our makeup and cleansing, or putting makeup on, is usually a time of picking ourselves apart. Clean beauty has brought that to my awareness and shifted my mindset to a place of love and acceptance and gratitude.

What is your favorite product in the shop right now - why?

I don't know if I can choose just one!! May Lindstrom's Blue Cocoon is truly the epitome of luxury meeting performance and I'm obsessed. I'm also really digging the Tata Harper Glow Getter with Classic Dermaplane (I know it's a service, but it's just SO good) because that glow afterwards is EVERYTHING. Seriously, it screams summer. Last, I can't get enough of DedCool #1. That scent makes me feel so feminine and happy and it lasts all day.

What does self-care mean to you and how do you make time for it?

Self care has honestly been so tough for me to learn. I tend to focus on others and have a hard time taking in the fact that I'm deserving of time to just be. As I've learned that and taken the time to grow into myself, self care has become taking the time to make a budget and sticking to it, choosing discipline over convenience (still working on that!), and spending time with friends who are good to me and for me. Most of all? It's been calling myself out on the stuff that doesn't serve me and then adjusting accordingly through self reflection, meditation, and therapy. I've in no way achieved balance in my life or in my self care routine, but I do know how much better life seems to flow when I wake up, meditate, pray, and have coffee. So I try to do that every day. I also try to keep what's important to me, important. Monday's are for therapy, Wednesday's are for my best pal, and every day is for gratitude!

What is your favorite restaurant in Nashville?

It really changes all the time, since Nashville has so many great new places! My goto's are The Eastern Peak for takeout (their Pad Thai is perfect for a cozy night in) and you'll definitely see my bestie and I at Butchertown Hall for margaritas and apps at least once a week!

Meet Massey!

IMG_82DF44E98ED0-1.jpeg

Tell us a little bit about yourself & your background?

After graduating college I worked in Nashville as a realtor for 5 years. I left real estate to pursue my creative endeavors which included working towards a master's degree in creative writing at The University of the South. I still have two years left to graduate. As a hobby I also perform burlesque. Burlesque is what helped me learn about and gain a passion for make-up.

What do you love most about clean beauty?

I love the ritual of clean beauty. I consider skin care a huge part of my self-care routine. To know that what I am putting on my skin is organic and safe makes me feel like I am truly treating myself. It's the ultimate luxury!

Favorite product in the shop right now- why?

My favorite products in the shop right now are the Agent Nateur Holi C and Holi Oil. I've always had vitamin C in my skin care routine but Kat totally sold me on these. Unlike other vitamin C's it has sodium asorbyl phosphate, which helps fight acne. So it won't break you out like some other vitamin C's can.

What does self-care mean to you and how do you make time for it?

Self-care to me is a lot of different things. It ranges from therapy to a nutritious warm cooked meal to a good book. For me, it is really trying to stay true to myself and staying present.

What are some of your favorite things?

I love to travel and see new places, but I especially love the ocean. I love spending time with family and friends. My favorite meal is Mafiaoza's pizza followed by the skillet cookie at Bricktop's. I love to read. My favorite book is probably Bad Feministe by Roxane Gay.

Meet Our Nail Artist, Chela!

ACS_0284.JPG

What's one thing we'd be surprised to learn about you?

Something surprising....that’s a hard one. Most people who know me already know this but I love love love Selena Quintanilla. She’s definitely an idol/role model of mine. Coming from Mexican descent myself, she’s someone I’ve looked up to since I was a little girl and I always wanted to be like her. She truly just radiated happiness and kindness while she was here with us and I want nothing more than to do the same. I have a picture of her smiling framed on my wall and I look at it every morning for motivation!

What do you enjoy about doing nails?

I love that each nail is a tiny canvas to create art. I have always been really artistic and creative so this is definitely a great way for me to express that. Also, building relationships and meeting awesome people. That’s so rewarding!

Any favorite nail colors this season?

No Panty Wednesday by Aila - fun summery pink

Ginger by Aila - vibrant coral (that’s also great for this hot weather)

Going Glamping by JRJ - the perfect nude

Any hobbies?

I love playing soccer on the weekends! It’s such a good stress reliever and super fun. I’m a proud mother of a 3-year-old little girl, so hanging out with her, taking her to the park or dancing it out with her in the living room are definitely some of my main hobbies.  Also...binge watching on Netflix. Sooo guilty of that!

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to so many genres of music, it’s hard to narrow it down. I love hip hop/r&b, so I’d say that’s a favorite. I also love me some Lana del Rey.

Thanks, Chela! We're so happy to have you on our team!

Meet Our Nail Artist, Sarah!

Where are you from?
I was raised in Ashland City, TN and am currently living in Old Hickory.

How would you describe your personality?
I'm shy and very laid back. It's usually pretty hard to make me upset.

What inspires you and the nail art you create?
I love sitting and playing with all of the art supplies to see what happens. There are a lot of things like lace and scrapbook supplies that can be great to use.

What made you choose a career in this field?
It was something fun and creative to do plus I enjoy working with my hands.

What is something we would be surprised to learn about you?
I'm a huge gamer nerd. Dark Souls and Witcher are some of my favorite games.

What is the weirdest place you have ever found nail art inspiration from?
A piece of my hair fell and dragged through the paint on a nail I was practicing on. I liked it better that way and mimicked the rest of it with an art brush

What's the one thing in life you want to accomplish that you haven't yet?
I would definitely like to learn Spanish well enough to use it fluently some day.

Thanks, Sarah!

Why This, Not That - Sunscreen

Sunscreen season is every season but with summer approaching fast you're bound to be outside more than ever. Time spent under the sun is the quickest way to age and damage our skin which is why we recommend wearing a sunscreen all year round. Unfortunately most of the sunscreens we reach for to protect our skin actually harm our bodies and our skin with toxic ingredients. Sunscreens commonly include ingredients that act as “penetration enhancers” to help the product adhere to skin. As a result, these chemicals are absorbed into the body and can be measured in blood, breast milk and urine samples. So, before slathering on your old sunscreen on yourself or your babies be sure to check the label for the following ingredients: Oxybenzone:  Acts like estrogen in the body and is associated with endometriosis in women. Octinoxate: Shown to have hormone mimicking effects causing biochemical and cellular level changes in the body. In addition to reproductive system, thyroid and behavioral alterations in animal studies.    Parabens: Mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptor. Why slather on harsh chemicals when you are trying to protect your skin? Suntegrity’s SPF 30 Natural Mineral Body Sunscreen made Environmental Working Group's (EWG)  2016 "Best Beach & Sport Sunscreens" list and received a #1 rating in the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database. It offers broad-spectrum protection and is free of harsh chemicals like parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, synthetic dyes, sulfates, nanoparticles and chemical UV absorbers. It's non-greasy and contains 20% non-nano, uncoated zinc-oxide for therapeutic broad-spectrum protection against the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays and is loaded with antioxidants. We also carry an unscented version for sensitive skin, babies, and those who prefer no scent. Stop in and try it for yourself, your skin will thank you!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Jessie Baylin

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a born and raised Jersey girl! At 18 I made my way out west to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams of being a professional recording artist. 7 years ago I married my husband and made the move to Nashville and I really love living in this southern oasis. We have a four year old daughter named Violet. I enjoy cooking, reading cookbooks, hiking & connecting with friends over good wine, food & conversation.

What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care is a big part of what helps keep me sane in, at times, a chaotic world.  Body work, beauty work... it is important to me and makes me feel like I'm really living in my body.

What is your favorite aspect of being a mom?

Constantly being amazed by her humor, empathy, voice & fiery personality.  Never a dull moment with this little red headed girl. She is my everything.

How do you take time for yourself?

I do my best to move my body every day after Violet's at school.  That keeps my head on straight and physically, I just feel better. Routine is important to me and that routine also includes making time for myself with friends, my husband... sneaking in moments when I can. I don't feel bad about that because I'm a better mother for my daughter when I'm feeling like I've had my time & space.

What's the hardest thing you find about taking time for yourself?

I wouldn't say I find it hard right now. That could change, and probably will! Ha.

What's your favorite way to spend time with your daughter?

Spending the morning running errands together and finishing that with a park play date where we run around pretending we are fairies or princesses or whatever she wants us to be on that particular day - followed by a nice meal together at a restaurant where she can taste some new things!

Thanks so much Jessie, we could all learn a lot from your healthy attitude about taking time for yourself in order to be your best self! Happy Mother's Day!

Why This, Not That - Deodorant

One of the very first things we tell all of our clients when making the switch to a non-toxic lifestyle is to change your deodorant! 90% of American use deodorant daily, however this seemingly safe daily hygiene ritual can have serious consequences on your health. It is one of the most toxic products in your bathroom. Traditional versions often contain harmful chemicals linked to breast cancer, Alzheimer's, and kidney disease. We have searched for the best natural deodorants on the market and we think you'll be impressed with how well they work. A few things you should look for and stay far away from when searching for deodorant are: Parabens: known to disturb the body’s hormonal balance and to mimic estrogen and can act as a potential endocrine system disruptors. Aluminum compounds: This is often labeled as an antiperspirant. Sweating is a prime form of detoxification for the human body, blocking our sweat glands to do what they were made for is not only unhealthy, but scary! These aluminum compounds act as a plug within the sweat ducts and temporarily stop the flow of sweat. Like parabens, they mimic estrogen, which promotes growth of breast cancer cells. Triclosan: Known to cause skin irritations, contact dermatitis, and kills both good and bacteria in our bodies. The FDA classifies triclosan as a pesticide, while the IARC has it listed as a possible carcinogen. After searching high and low for the best non-toxic deodorants on the market we've defiantly found some winners that do not disappoint. Kaia Naturals Bamboo Charcoal Deodorant was an easy winner, particularly when it came to switching clients over who have been using conventional deodorants their entire lives. This breakthrough deodorant features a time-honoured Japanese secret for odor control and detoxification. With a combination of activated charcoal and natural fermentation technology it eliminates odor-causing bacterial, controls humidity and best of all detoxifies your underarms of years of toxic buildup. This Aluminum-Free, Vegan, Baking Soda-Free, Paraben-Free Deodorant is a must have for anyone making the switch to a non-toxic lifestyle. It comes in 3 scents-Grapefruit & Orange, Cold Pressed Rose and Lime Mint (our warm weather fav!). Stop in and let us show you why this is an easy switch to make!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Emily Eggebrecht

Tell us a bit about yourself - My name is Emily Eggebrecht. I am the owner of Consider the Wldflwrs a jewelry brand based in Nashville, TN. I have a diploma in graduate diamonds and I am a bench jeweler. Here at CTWF I manage a team of 3 other people and we each have our own specialties that make our jobs really special to each of us. I have a husband named Ben and a sweet little pup named Peeve. I have been in Nashville for 7 years and originally moved here to study Opera. Nashville is my home and I can’t wait to see it grow and change in the years to come. Do you have a favorite aspect of your job? My favorite aspect of my job is celebrating with people. When people come to us with their life milestones whether it is graduation, marriage, having a baby or an anniversary I love to hear their stories and celebrate those moments with them. I love being in the wedding industry because almost every weekend I know someone getting married and it’s so sweet and special!     What does self-care mean to you? Self-care means a work/life balance for me. I am a number three on the enneagram.. or what they call “the achiever” so I strive to finish my to-do list and find satisfaction in that - often working way more than the average person. But I have also learned that I am better in relationships, friendships and I am a better boss when I set aside “me” time. For me that means quality time with Ben (most likely at happy hour at taproom), spending time outside (enough time to consider the wildflowers ;)) and getting my nails done (P&M fan of course). What inspired you to start your own company? My original inspiration for starting my own company was to be able to make jewelry and sell it for a good cause. I will say, when I first started my company I did not intend to be my own boss forever. I kept trying to get other jobs for a long time but eventually I realized that this was the plan laid out for me, and I believed that it would survive because God wanted it to. God had restored so much that was broken in my life and given me the confidence to start a business so even today I figure that it is in His hands! What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss? The biggest lesson I have learned is probably that your business is not YOU. You are not your business… have a life outside of it. Have relationships and healthy lifestyle habits because if you let the ups and downs of owning a business run your life you will never be free from it! People always tell me that it must be nice to be your own boss, but I always say… oh you have no idea the self-control involved in running a business and not letting it run you! Spring is finally here! What's your favorite thing about this season? Flowers!! Of course… seeing wildflowers on the side of the roads is my absolute favorite. I named my company shortly after a summer trip to Colorado where I saw mountains and mountains of wildflowers. I really do love them.    Emily is hosting a huge giveaway right now that includes a $750 gift card to Consider the Wldflwrs as well as a cookbook from Nutrition Stripped and a Classic Manicure & Luxe Pedicure from us! Tell us a bit about yourself -

My name is Emily Eggebrecht.

Why This, Not That - Sunless Tanner

We don't need to tell you that lounging by the pool slathered in tanning oil or baking yourself in those giant microwaves is a questionable life choice, you already knew that. But are at-home self tanners always a safer way to get bronzed? Chances are you've probably been a little curious about what ingredients are required to change your skin tone. While some self tanners may pose less risk than basking in UVA and UVB rays, that doesn't mean you should automatically give them the green light. We always encourage you to embrace your natural beauty but if you want to live out your inner beach babe fantasies, be sure to be on the lookout for these ingredients in your sunless tanning products first - 3-DIOL: is an antimicrobial preservative that works by forming formaldehyde in cosmetic products. In the U.S. approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde-releaser and the frequency of contact allergy to these ingredients is much higher among Americans compared to studies in Europe.     Fragrance: Are we still talking about this one!? Stay far away from this undisclosed chemical cocktail. There is no way to know what chemicals have been used because the FDA only requires manufacturers to list them as “Fragrance.” They may include ingredients related to cancer, birth defects, nervous system disorders, neurotoxicity, and allergic reactions. Parabens: A fragrance ingredient that acts as a preservative. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. Ditch the self tanners filled with these pesky ingredients and switch to one that not only smells heavenly, but is actually good for you! Suntegrity has changed the way you tan by infusing botanical extracts (including Goji, Acai, Mangosteen, & Noni), hydrating organic oils, nourishing vitamin E, and antioxidants into a luxurious sunless tanning lotion that is healthier and better than a real tan. This natural self tanner will have you looking like you’ve been on a beach holiday without exposing your precious skin to the sun’s harmful rays. We've had our die-hard self tanning clients testing it out all year and they have nothing but rave reviews. Come try it for yourself this Spring!

Meet our Nail Artist, Claire!

Claire New.JPG

Where are you from?

I'm from Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

How would you describe your personality?

I'm an ENFJ, a Taurus, and my life path number is 3. I'm generally pretty chilled out and laid back. I love to laugh. I also have a stubborn streak and a strong aversion to chaos.

What inspires you and the nail art you create?

I get inspired by everything: nature, architecture, fashion, fine art... you name it.

What made you choose a career in this field?

I've loved painting nails since I was in middle school. Being a nail tech invigorates me as a people person and a creative.

What is something we would be surprised to learn about you?

I have a weird obsession with sharks.

What is the weirdest place you have ever found nail art inspiration from?

Yarn! I did a set of nails for Rebekka Seale (of Camellia Fiber Company) inspired by her hand-dyed "Seaspray" colorway. That was a really fun collaboration.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Japan. It's always been a dream of mine to study nail art in Tokyo.

Thank you, Claire! We are so proud to have you on the P&M Team!

Meet Katje

We adore our amazing esthetician, Katje, and we thought you might like to learn a bit more about her too:

What do you love about your job?

I love helping people feel good in their own skin!

Being an essential oil guru, which ones are your favorites right now?

Ooh! Right now, I am loving peppermint, frankincense, and wild orange.

You're certified in Aroma Touch, why should I check it out?

The powerful benefits of essential oils can drastically improve one’s health and emotional well-being.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love to workout; I just tried buti yoga, and I’m totally hooked!

Katje is an absolute expert in all things skin and makeup related and she's just as kind as she is knowledgeable. Come see why we're crazy about her!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Mary Mooney

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm a visual artist! I paint using acrylic glass as my "canvas", which gives my work an incredible depth and allows me to cut and shape it in way that wouldn't be possible on a fabric. This has allowed me to use my work in unique ways to create a living that hone my skills for my gallery work. I'm working towards a solo exhibit at the Red Arrow Gallery in February that will explore gender and landscape. I'm also working on creating balance in my life so I can better answer this question in the future. :)

Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

My favorite part is creating work, because it's so empowering to dream something up and see it actualized. I work in abstract imagery, so it's really special when my work resonates and connects with someone else.

What does self-care mean to you?

My husband Nathan is in social work so self care is a frequently used term and topic of discussion in our house. You have to take the time to take care of yourself, so you can bring your best self to everything else. I love that you two value it and have made it your mission, because I think often our society blows by self care as an indulgence instead of a necessary piece of balance.

What inspired you to start your own company?

I wanted to create work as often as possible, and I knew to do that in a sustainable and responsible way it needed to be a part of my income. After working for several small businesses became really enamored with the idea of making a living for myself.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH AS YOU GO! I think there is a huge pressure to know everything about your business or industry before you start....but, aspiring girl boss, you just gotta get out there and be open to learning as you go. No one ever starts in the middle.

Fall is finally here! What's your favorite thing about this season?

Fires outside! And maybe some s'mores too. ;)

Thank you, Mary!

Being one of the purest beauty lines on the market, we knew we had to have RMS in our shop. It's important to us to have cosmetic lines that look beautiful, are simple in application and are non-toxic. RMS  takes all of this criteria to another level with 100% transparency and commitment to bringing safe, beautiful products to women of all ages and skin types. RMS Beauty was founded by renowned makeup artist, Rose-Marie Swift. Read more about Rose-Marie's journey to non-toxic beauty below (excerpt from www.rmsbeauty.com):

Several years ago, Rose-Marie began to experience some health issues that were causing many problems physically, mentally and emotionally. After an extensive series of tests, she learned that her blood contained toxic levels of heavy metals including aluminum, barium, cadmium, lead and mercury as well as high levels of pesticides and other chemicals.
Rose-Marie was surprised when the technician asked if she worked in the cosmetics industry. Until then she had no idea that cosmetics could contribute to serious health issues. After years of rebuilding her own health, Rose-Marie realized that she wanted to help other women claim their right to healthy beauty. To achieve this goal she created RMS Beauty, her acclaimed line of organic color cosmetics.
Rose-Marie is an outspoken advocate for women protecting themselves from the toxic chemicals found in products they use on their bodies daily. She created the website www.beautytruth.com to dispel beauty myths and expose some of the dangers of personal care products.

“Somebody once said to me, that because it's organic it's good for you, and it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work as well as the mainstream stuff - I intend to change their mind.”
-Sasha Plavsic, founder of ILIA.

ILIA has become one of our favorite lip care lines because of the versatility of their collections. From ultra-pigmented options to sheer conditioning formulas,  they are filled with certified organic bio-active botanicals which nourish and rejuvenate the skin. Once we tried ILIA's products, we were hooked. Organic shouldn't have to mean you sacrifice beauty or performance and ILIA gets that 100%.  "Our skin is our largest organ, and can absorb just about anything we put to its surface. ILIA is formulated with this in mind, and dedicated to creating the purest products possible."  -ILIA

Woman Crush Wednesday - Emily Herron

•Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Emily Herron and I relocated to Nashville from a small town in Ontario. I've been here about 6 years and I never want to leave! About a year ago I started EMLEE design and it's been an amazing journey.

•Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

It's so hard to choose! I love that I get to make my own schedule (although I am a notorious procrastinator) and I love to work from home. I think my favorite part is getting to meet real women and impacting their lives in my small way. It's so wonderful when I connect with someone, online or in person, and I get to make their day. Everyone loves to find the piece of clothing that makes them feel like a million bucks and I love when I've made that one piece.

•What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care to me means indulging in my hearts desire without any guilt. I usually have that list of what I could be doing in the back of my mind rather than being in the moment. Whether it's that second glass of wine or a good soak in the bath when there's laundry to be done or emails to answer, I try to remind myself that I'm more important than my to-do list.

•What inspired you to start your own company?

I just decided "why not?". I have had this in my heart for quite some time and I decided that I had put it off for for long enough.

•What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

Being a girl boss looks different for everyone so don't compare your journey to anyone else's. Everyone has to start somewhere, so don't despise your small beginnings. I still struggle with comparing myself to others, but I find I'm happiest and most fulfilled in my work when I'm celebrating my successes without measuring them up to anyone else's.

•It's summer! What's your current theme song?

Right now I'm in love with one of my besties new songs from her EP, "The Best Part" by Bien. It's the sweetest!

Thank you, Emily!

4 STEPS TO (NON-TOXIC) VICTORIA'S SECRET HAIR

(L to R) Captain Blankenship Golden Waves Sea Salt Shimmer Spray; Captain Blankenship Mermaid Dry Shampoo

(L to R) Captain Blankenship Golden Waves Sea Salt Shimmer Spray; Captain Blankenship Mermaid Dry Shampoo

Our lovely aesthetician, Katje, shows how to achieve voluminous, beach waves in four easy steps - none of which uses toxic chemicals! See more below:

1. Use a wand to wrap 1 inch sections of hair. Alternate the direction you wrap the hair all the way around head but curl the pieces in front away from face.

2.   Use Mermaid dry shampoo powder directly on the root all over then massage in to create texture and volume.

3. Gently tousle hair by and separate waves.

4.  Spray on Golden Waves Sea salt shimmer spray for a beachy, tousled look with a hint of golden shine.

VOILA!
