Woman Crush Wednesday - Katie Vance

Tell us a little bit about yourself-where you're from, what neighborhood you live in, your favorite downtime activity, your favorite book, anything else you'd like to share?    I am from Mufreesboro, Tennessee - I know a rare Middle TN native!  I live in Lascassas - a cute little farm town outside of Nashville.  I live on my husband's family farm.  Its a great retreat from my work city life!  Downtime...what's that?  Ha I love what I do so I sometimes do it around the clock.  But I love meeting family and friends out for a great meal or tasty drink.  My favorite book right now is In the Company of Women.  So inspiring to us lady entrepreneurs!  We are going to Iceland in August!  So excited!  Anyone have recs?   Do you have a favorite aspect of your job? I absolutely love making spaces that make people feel good to be in and I LOVE my clients!  When I present something to a client and they are like "ok you get me" - that's definitely my favorite part.  Also tile.  Everything tile.  Ha.   What does self-care mean to you?   To me self care means a tool to help you weather life's storms.   What inspired you to start your own company?   I had done craft shows for years and always left feeling like Nashville had the talent to have its own.  So I just decided to make my own!  Of course I took a lot of the things I had learned over the years of being a Vendor and tried to make a show that was Vendor & Shopper centric.  Its been a pleasure meeting so many talented makers and of course I love to use them in my Interiors work!  What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?   My biggest lesson I have learned is that you cannot make everyone happy all of time and my encouragment would be to "just start" - waiting till everything is perfect will keep your idea in waiting a long time or even forever.  Your website, your photos, etc may not be where you want them in the beginning but start somewhere!  Get it out there!  Spring is finally here! What's your favorite thing about this season?   Playing with my sweet dog Dottie outside.  And enjoying any of Nashville's fine patios!  Of course Butchertown Hall which I am quite partial too!  Thanks, Katie!

Why This, Not That - Deodorant

One of the very first things we tell all of our clients when making the switch to a non-toxic lifestyle is to change your deodorant! 90% of American use deodorant daily, however this seemingly safe daily hygiene ritual can have serious consequences on your health. It is one of the most toxic products in your bathroom. Traditional versions often contain harmful chemicals linked to breast cancer, Alzheimer's, and kidney disease. We have searched for the best natural deodorants on the market and we think you'll be impressed with how well they work. A few things you should look for and stay far away from when searching for deodorant are: Parabens: known to disturb the body’s hormonal balance and to mimic estrogen and can act as a potential endocrine system disruptors. Aluminum compounds: This is often labeled as an antiperspirant. Sweating is a prime form of detoxification for the human body, blocking our sweat glands to do what they were made for is not only unhealthy, but scary! These aluminum compounds act as a plug within the sweat ducts and temporarily stop the flow of sweat. Like parabens, they mimic estrogen, which promotes growth of breast cancer cells. Triclosan: Known to cause skin irritations, contact dermatitis, and kills both good and bacteria in our bodies. The FDA classifies triclosan as a pesticide, while the IARC has it listed as a possible carcinogen. After searching high and low for the best non-toxic deodorants on the market we've defiantly found some winners that do not disappoint. Kaia Naturals Bamboo Charcoal Deodorant was an easy winner, particularly when it came to switching clients over who have been using conventional deodorants their entire lives. This breakthrough deodorant features a time-honoured Japanese secret for odor control and detoxification. With a combination of activated charcoal and natural fermentation technology it eliminates odor-causing bacterial, controls humidity and best of all detoxifies your underarms of years of toxic buildup. This Aluminum-Free, Vegan, Baking Soda-Free, Paraben-Free Deodorant is a must have for anyone making the switch to a non-toxic lifestyle. It comes in 3 scents-Grapefruit & Orange, Cold Pressed Rose and Lime Mint (our warm weather fav!). Stop in and let us show you why this is an easy switch to make!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Emily Eggebrecht

Tell us a bit about yourself - My name is Emily Eggebrecht. I am the owner of Consider the Wldflwrs a jewelry brand based in Nashville, TN. I have a diploma in graduate diamonds and I am a bench jeweler. Here at CTWF I manage a team of 3 other people and we each have our own specialties that make our jobs really special to each of us. I have a husband named Ben and a sweet little pup named Peeve. I have been in Nashville for 7 years and originally moved here to study Opera. Nashville is my home and I can’t wait to see it grow and change in the years to come. Do you have a favorite aspect of your job? My favorite aspect of my job is celebrating with people. When people come to us with their life milestones whether it is graduation, marriage, having a baby or an anniversary I love to hear their stories and celebrate those moments with them. I love being in the wedding industry because almost every weekend I know someone getting married and it’s so sweet and special!   What does self-care mean to you? Self-care means a work/life balance for me. I am a number three on the enneagram.. or what they call “the achiever” so I strive to finish my to-do list and find satisfaction in that - often working way more than the average person. But I have also learned that I am better in relationships, friendships and I am a better boss when I set aside “me” time. For me that means quality time with Ben (most likely at happy hour at taproom), spending time outside (enough time to consider the wildflowers ;)) and getting my nails done (P&M fan of course). What inspired you to start your own company? My original inspiration for starting my own company was to be able to make jewelry and sell it for a good cause. I will say, when I first started my company I did not intend to be my own boss forever. I kept trying to get other jobs for a long time but eventually I realized that this was the plan laid out for me, and I believed that it would survive because God wanted it to. God had restored so much that was broken in my life and given me the confidence to start a business so even today I figure that it is in His hands! What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss? The biggest lesson I have learned is probably that your business is not YOU. You are not your business… have a life outside of it. Have relationships and healthy lifestyle habits because if you let the ups and downs of owning a business run your life you will never be free from it! People always tell me that it must be nice to be your own boss, but I always say… oh you have no idea the self-control involved in running a business and not letting it run you! Spring is finally here! What's your favorite thing about this season? Flowers!! Of course… seeing wildflowers on the side of the roads is my absolute favorite. I named my company shortly after a summer trip to Colorado where I saw mountains and mountains of wildflowers. I really do love them.  Emily is hosting a huge giveaway right now that includes a $750 gift card to Consider the Wldflwrs as well as a cookbook from Nutrition Stripped and a Classic Manicure & Luxe Pedicure from us! Why This, Not That - Sunless Tanner

We don't need to tell you that lounging by the pool slathered in tanning oil or baking yourself in those giant microwaves is a questionable life choice, you already knew that. But are at-home self tanners always a safer way to get bronzed? Chances are you've probably been a little curious about what ingredients are required to change your skin tone. While some self tanners may pose less risk than basking in UVA and UVB rays, that doesn't mean you should automatically give them the green light. We always encourage you to embrace your natural beauty but if you want to live out your inner beach babe fantasies, be sure to be on the lookout for these ingredients in your sunless tanning products first - 3-DIOL: is an antimicrobial preservative that works by forming formaldehyde in cosmetic products. In the U.S. approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde-releaser and the frequency of contact allergy to these ingredients is much higher among Americans compared to studies in Europe.   Fragrance: Are we still talking about this one!? Stay far away from this undisclosed chemical cocktail. There is no way to know what chemicals have been used because the FDA only requires manufacturers to list them as “Fragrance.” They may include ingredients related to cancer, birth defects, nervous system disorders, neurotoxicity, and allergic reactions. Parabens: A fragrance ingredient that acts as a preservative. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. Ditch the self tanners filled with these pesky ingredients and switch to one that not only smells heavenly, but is actually good for you! Suntegrity has changed the way you tan by infusing botanical extracts (including Goji, Acai, Mangosteen, & Noni), hydrating organic oils, nourishing vitamin E, and antioxidants into a luxurious sunless tanning lotion that is healthier and better than a real tan. This natural self tanner will have you looking like you’ve been on a beach holiday without exposing your precious skin to the sun’s harmful rays. We've had our die-hard self tanning clients testing it out all year and they have nothing but rave reviews. Come try it for yourself this Spring!

Meet Our Nail Artist, Giselle!

Where are you from?

I'm from New York, but my parents are from El Salvador.

How would you describe your personality?

I tend to be shy when I first meet people but once I get to know you I'm pretty outgoing.

What inspires you and the nail art you create?

I get inspired by everything around me including other nail artists. I often teach myself new techniques and always add my own twist.

What made you choose a career in this field?

The fact that I can be an artist at whatever it is that I'm doing and that I can always think creatively.

What is something we would be surprised to learn about you?

I am not a girly girl at all. I love playing sports and getting dirty rather than worrying about breaking a nail.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

I would have to say my son, I learn something from him everyday.

What beauty essential can you not live without?

Coconut oil!

Thanks, Giselle!

Meet Our Nail Artist, Imani

image1.JPG

Where are you from?

Philly, but I've been in Nashville for about 15 years.

How would you describe your personality?

I'd describe my personality as reserved but silly once I warm up to people. I love to laugh!

What inspires you and the nail art you create?

I pull inspiration from so many things like fashion or any type of art, even music. It usually just depends on how I'm feeling.

What made you choose a career in this field?

I have always wanted to be in the beauty industry because I love making people feel beautiful. I love to see the reactions. With that and my love of art it just felt perfect for me to be a nail artist.

What is something we would be surprised to learn about you?

I really want to be a DJ someday.

What is the weirdest place you have ever found nail art inspiration from?

Probably wallpaper.

What's the one thing in life you want to accomplish that you haven't yet?

Gosh, there's so many things I want to do! I'd have to say being a mentor to young girls is on the top of my list of things I want to accomplish.

Thanks, Imani!

Meet Our Nail Artist, Carson!

Where are you from?

I'm from Memphis, TN.

How would you describe your personality?

For lack of a better word, I would describe myself as quirky. *Laughs*

What inspires you and the nail art you create?

I get inspired from the people around me, the people I work with and my clients.  I also love using the outdoors to inspire my nail art.

What made you choose a career in this field?

Growing up I was always doing nails or hair on anyone I could get my hands on.  I knew immediately out of high school that I wanted to go into cosmetology. I have always loved nails because I can be creative and incredibly precise.

What is something we would be surprised to learn about you?

I love trivia and am always full of fun facts! If I didn't choose a career in cosmetology I would have been a zoologist.

What is the weirdest place you have ever found nail art inspiration from?

A coffee cup, candle, dogs fur, clock, and a hat.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I've always wanted to go to Iceland!

Thanks Carson!

Meet our Nail Artist, Claire!

Where are you from?

I'm from Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

How would you describe your personality?

I'm an ENFJ, a Taurus, and my life path number is 3. I'm generally pretty chilled out and laid back. I love to laugh. I also have a stubborn streak and a strong aversion to chaos.

What inspires you and the nail art you create?

I get inspired by everything: nature, architecture, fashion, fine art... you name it.

What made you choose a career in this field?

I've loved painting nails since I was in middle school. Being a nail tech invigorates me as a people person and a creative.

What is something we would be surprised to learn about you?

I have a weird obsession with sharks.

What is the weirdest place you have ever found nail art inspiration from?

Yarn! I did a set of nails for Rebekka Seale (of Camellia Fiber Company) inspired by her hand-dyed "Seaspray" colorway. That was a really fun collaboration.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Japan. It's always been a dream of mine to study nail art in Tokyo.

Thank you, Claire! We are so proud to have you on the P&M Team!

Meet our Creative Nail Lead - YaSheaka

Where are you from?

I’m a Nashville native. I was born in East Nashville and graduated from Nashville School of the Arts.

What mediums do you use for expressing your artistic side?

I express art every day in every way- through clothes, hair, poetry, music, professional makeup services, and art at Poppy & Monroe.

What's one thing we'd be surprised to learn about you?

I have an alter ego named Inez (think opposite of Sasha Fierce). She's my soft spoken, gentler sister.

I'm also totally obsessed with Prince and the color, purple (go figure).

What do you enjoy about doing nails?

Figuring out what's right for each client based on their individual nails. I enjoy a good challenge. I love interacting with people and playing therapist.  Most of all I enjoy expressing my art through painting tiny canvases.

Any favorite nail colors this season?

Aila - Mr. Pookies (a deep rich brown)

Aila - Kelly a perfect pinky nude)

LVX - Vamp (deep purple)

Thanks YaSheaka. We're so glad to have you on the P&M team!

Meet Katje

LG|PM-8227.jpg

We adore our amazing esthetician, Katje, and we thought you might like to learn a bit more about her too:

What do you love about your job?

I love helping people feel good in their own skin!

Being an essential oil guru, which ones are your favorites right now?

Ooh! Right now, I am loving peppermint, frankincense, and wild orange.

You're certified in Aroma Touch, why should I check it out?

The powerful benefits of essential oils can drastically improve one’s health and emotional well-being.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love to workout; I just tried buti yoga, and I’m totally hooked!

Katje is an absolute expert in all things skin and makeup related and she's just as kind as she is knowledgeable. Come see why we're crazy about her!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Mary Mooney

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm a visual artist! I paint using acrylic glass as my "canvas", which gives my work an incredible depth and allows me to cut and shape it in way that wouldn't be possible on a fabric. This has allowed me to use my work in unique ways to create a living that hone my skills for my gallery work. I'm working towards a solo exhibit at the Red Arrow Gallery in February that will explore gender and landscape. I'm also working on creating balance in my life so I can better answer this question in the future. :)

Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

My favorite part is creating work, because it's so empowering to dream something up and see it actualized. I work in abstract imagery, so it's really special when my work resonates and connects with someone else.

What does self-care mean to you?

My husband Nathan is in social work so self care is a frequently used term and topic of discussion in our house. You have to take the time to take care of yourself, so you can bring your best self to everything else. I love that you two value it and have made it your mission, because I think often our society blows by self care as an indulgence instead of a necessary piece of balance.

What inspired you to start your own company?

I wanted to create work as often as possible, and I knew to do that in a sustainable and responsible way it needed to be a part of my income. After working for several small businesses became really enamored with the idea of making a living for myself.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH AS YOU GO! I think there is a huge pressure to know everything about your business or industry before you start....but, aspiring girl boss, you just gotta get out there and be open to learning as you go. No one ever starts in the middle.

Fall is finally here! What's your favorite thing about this season?

Fires outside! And maybe some s'mores too. ;)

Thank you, Mary!

Being one of the purest beauty lines on the market, we knew we had to have RMS in our shop. It's important to us to have cosmetic lines that look beautiful, are simple in application and are non-toxic. RMS  takes all of this criteria to another level with 100% transparency and commitment to bringing safe, beautiful products to women of all ages and skin types. RMS Beauty was founded by renowned makeup artist, Rose-Marie Swift. Read more about Rose-Marie's journey to non-toxic beauty below (excerpt from www.rmsbeauty.com):

Several years ago, Rose-Marie began to experience some health issues that were causing many problems physically, mentally and emotionally. After an extensive series of tests, she learned that her blood contained toxic levels of heavy metals including aluminum, barium, cadmium, lead and mercury as well as high levels of pesticides and other chemicals.
Rose-Marie was surprised when the technician asked if she worked in the cosmetics industry. Until then she had no idea that cosmetics could contribute to serious health issues. After years of rebuilding her own health, Rose-Marie realized that she wanted to help other women claim their right to healthy beauty. To achieve this goal she created RMS Beauty, her acclaimed line of organic color cosmetics.
Rose-Marie is an outspoken advocate for women protecting themselves from the toxic chemicals found in products they use on their bodies daily. She created the website www.beautytruth.com to dispel beauty myths and expose some of the dangers of personal care products.

“Somebody once said to me, that because it's organic it's good for you, and it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work as well as the mainstream stuff - I intend to change their mind.”
-Sasha Plavsic, founder of ILIA.

ILIA has become one of our favorite lip care lines because of the versatility of their collections. From ultra-pigmented options to sheer conditioning formulas,  they are filled with certified organic bio-active botanicals which nourish and rejuvenate the skin. Once we tried ILIA's products, we were hooked. Organic shouldn't have to mean you sacrifice beauty or performance and ILIA gets that 100%.  "Our skin is our largest organ, and can absorb just about anything we put to its surface. ILIA is formulated with this in mind, and dedicated to creating the purest products possible."  -ILIA

Woman Crush Wednesday - Emily Herron

•Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Emily Herron and I relocated to Nashville from a small town in Ontario. I've been here about 6 years and I never want to leave! About a year ago I started EMLEE design and it's been an amazing journey.

•Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

It's so hard to choose! I love that I get to make my own schedule (although I am a notorious procrastinator) and I love to work from home. I think my favorite part is getting to meet real women and impacting their lives in my small way. It's so wonderful when I connect with someone, online or in person, and I get to make their day. Everyone loves to find the piece of clothing that makes them feel like a million bucks and I love when I've made that one piece.

•What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care to me means indulging in my hearts desire without any guilt. I usually have that list of what I could be doing in the back of my mind rather than being in the moment. Whether it's that second glass of wine or a good soak in the bath when there's laundry to be done or emails to answer, I try to remind myself that I'm more important than my to-do list.

•What inspired you to start your own company?

I just decided "why not?". I have had this in my heart for quite some time and I decided that I had put it off for for long enough.

•What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

Being a girl boss looks different for everyone so don't compare your journey to anyone else's. Everyone has to start somewhere, so don't despise your small beginnings. I still struggle with comparing myself to others, but I find I'm happiest and most fulfilled in my work when I'm celebrating my successes without measuring them up to anyone else's.

•It's summer! What's your current theme song?

Right now I'm in love with one of my besties new songs from her EP, "The Best Part" by Bien. It's the sweetest!

Thank you, Emily!

(L to R) Captain Blankenship Golden Waves Sea Salt Shimmer Spray; Captain Blankenship Mermaid Dry Shampoo

Our lovely aesthetician, Katje, shows how to achieve voluminous, beach waves in four easy steps - none of which uses toxic chemicals! See more below:

1. Use a wand to wrap 1 inch sections of hair. Alternate the direction you wrap the hair all the way around head but curl the pieces in front away from face.

2.   Use Mermaid dry shampoo powder directly on the root all over then massage in to create texture and volume.

3. Gently tousle hair by and separate waves.

4.  Spray on Golden Waves Sea salt shimmer spray for a beachy, tousled look with a hint of golden shine.

VOILA!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Cara Jackson

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Cara Jackson. I’m originally from Monroe, Louisiana, but I’ve been in Nashville for almost 9 years. I’m a former intellectual property lawyer, but last year, I started a business management firm for fashion designers and creative businesses. The simplest way to describe what I do is that I’m a part-time CEO.

Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

It doesn’t feel like a job, so that’s one aspect I love! Another thing is that I get to work with incredibly talented people who are passionate about what they do. I get so much energy from helping a creative who has a killer product or idea and the drive to do the work that needs to be done.

What does self-care mean to you?

To me, self-care means turning everything off for a bit and doing something for myself. Sometimes it’s an hour of yoga or just making myself a healthy meal at home. And sometimes I wake up and it’s Friday and I realize that I’ve been running at full speed all week, so I’ll book a massage or a manicure over the weekend. I definitely have to be much more intentional about it nowadays.

What inspired you to start your own company?

There were several things. First and foremost, I wanted to find a way to put my legal and business skills to work so that I could be helpful to the people and brands that I admire in this town. Being part of the Nashville Fashion Alliance as it formed up and took off was definitely inspiring. And as I was thinking and planning and asking a lot of questions, I had great encouragement from my mentors and from people in the creative community, too.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

Have a plan. If you have an idea that you think is really great, then take the time to build a plan around it. You’ll be much more focused, confident and better equipped to navigate the roadblocks that you’re undoubtedly going to encounter.

It's summer! What's your current theme song?

I just discovered John Paul White’s album Beulah, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be in heavy rotation on my late-summer/early fall playlist.

Thank you, Cara!

"To The Moon and Black" by Antonym Cosmetics

Our lead esthetician, Suzanne Borgia, was inspired by the "To The Moon and Black" eye shadow quad from Antonym (a non-toxic cosmetics line we carry in our shop) and created this stunning look on Alidia! She also made a list of what she used - see below.

Face:
Suzanne used Antonym Powder Foundation. This is a build-able formula allowing you to apply as much (or little) as you'd like.  (in color Light for Alidia). Then she dusted Baked Organic Blush in "Peach" over the apples of the cheeks.

Eyes:
Time for the eyes! Suzanne used the Antonym eye shadow quad in "To The Moon And Black" to create a this soft smokey eye before using the Antonym Liner in "Noir" for definition. Mascara in "Noir" to finish.

Brows:
Don't forget those brows! Browfood Tinted Brow Enhancing Gel Fix in "Dark Brunette" is a must according to Suzanne because it not only holds brows in place but defines, conditions and helps them grow.

Lips:
Complete your look with Sunny Blush by Suntegrity (20% off in the shop!).

Heart eyes for days!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Rebekka Seale

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm Rebekka Seale, the owner of Camellia Fiber Company, a luxury yarn company based here in Nashville, Tennessee. We specialized in ethically sourced natural fibers, handspun yarn, and hand-dyed yarn using low-impact, earth friendly dyes. Our yarn is sold to knitters and weavers across the world via our online shop, as well as in our studio which is just a few blocks from Poppy and Monroe!

Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

I love color and playing with color. Our yarn colorways change seasonally and it's exhilarating to plan the next season's palette! Right now, our Fall mood board is overflowing with color inspiration from the earthy hues of Autumn herbs and spices: sage, cloves, and rosemary flowers.

What does self-care mean to you?

My definition of self care is always evolving as I get older and learn more about what it really means to treat myself well. In my 20's, I saw self care primarily as an excuse to be indulgent for indulgence's sake, and many of those indulgences weren't so good for me. Now that I am in my 30's, self care means making healthy choices that make me feel good in the long run...getting lots of sleep, eating mindfully, riding my bike, and choosing beauty products that are gentle on my body and gentle on the Earth.

What inspired you to start your own company?

I studied studio art and painting in college and...in my heart, I am always just an artist struggling to pay my bills! The yarn company started as a side gig while I was working full-time as an illustrator. I never expected it to grow to the size it is now. And it's not huge by any means, but it allows me to be creative and also have time to explore other creative outlets as well.

•What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

Understand your personality type, and work within it! Take the Enneagram personality typing test and really study your type. Seriously! Nothing has helped me in business more than this! We are all different. The same strategies don't work for everyone. Not in business, and not in life.

•It's summer! What's your current theme song?

Can't stop listening to the soundtrack from Hamilton. I know. Drama geek from way back when!

Thank you, Rebekka!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Kari Gran

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Kari, Co-Founder of Kari Gran Skin Care and I’m a Seattle native. I developed the eco-luxe skin care after battling an autoimmune thyroid disorder, further aggravated by the toxin-laden beauty products slathered on my skin daily without a second thought.  Ultimately, I’m one of those people who likes to share something that I love and that’s what happened with the skin care line at the urging of my business partner, Lisa.

Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

I love playing mad scientist in the lab. When I have time, I get to experiment with new materials in our back room, covered in oil.

What does self-care mean to you?

Eating food that is nourishing to my body, I can always tell the difference in my body when I eat something that will come back to bite me later.  It’s pretty tasty in the moment, but the price paid after the fact gets higher and higher!  I also meditate daily after learning Transcendental Meditation years ago.  It is deep rest in a little 20-minute session. Without it, I¹m not quite as charming as I’d like to be!  Last, I have found that lack of water and exercise has a much bigger impact than they used to. So, hydration is key as I keep my body moving.

What inspired you to start your own company?

My business partner and Co-Founder Lisa.  After I gave her a gift from the line I had created for myself, she thought there were more people who would like this minimal approach to skin care. Her name should be on the bottle; we wouldn’t be here without her big ideas.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

I don’t have to please everyone, it’s an impossible task. It also drains my energy and everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions, as am I.  I’ve learned not to take things personally, dust myself off and move forward instead of dwelling on any negative energy. We also know the difference between a real situation that needs immediate attention and what masquerades as important but, really, is just a time-suck.

It's summer! What's your current theme song?

I’m a little obsessed with the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album and Dark Necessities is my favorite. Sounds a little dark for summer, but I really love it.  The video is cool and love that it features female skate-boarders.  It’s not often I¹ll seek out the video for a song I love and I¹m really glad I did.

Thank you, Kari!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Branka Tomic

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Branka. I was born and raised in Chicago but my family is from Serbia (I visit quite often and still have family living there). I am the Co-Founder & Creative Director for LVX Nail Lacquer.

Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

Choosing and naming our seasonal colors and collections! Ever notice our color names have a historical or meaningful messages tied into the shades?

What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care is taking care of yourself (whether mentally or physically) in a way that helps propel you to be your best self for the given moment.

What inspired you to start your own company?

I’ve always had a desire to start my own business. I combined my entrepreneurial spirit with my obsession with nail polish and jumped feet  first into creating LVX. I believe nail polish has the power to express anyone’s  personality, individuality and emotion.

After finishing school, I couldn’t stop thinking about starting my own business- I knew the 9-5 world was really restricting my creative abilities and inner drive. After some serious soul searching, I discovered what I really wanted to do and realized that there was a void in the beauty market for an eco-friendly luxury nail brand. No other brand had a custom collection solely based on designer, runway and pantone color trends that directly fused with high fashion.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned as a Girl Boss and what encouragement can you offer an aspiring girl boss?

Amongst the challenges I have faced, one that really stands out is the importance of creating and building an extremely encouraging support system around you. It was (and still is) crucial for me to surround myself with positive and inspiring people I can learn and draw inspiration from. My advice to fellow entreprenuers is:

When it comes to business ideas with passion behind them, the only option is to run wild with them and not let anyone stop you. If you truly believe you will succeed - you will.

Follow your heart, not your wallet.  Passion is the best investment you can ever make in your business; if you’re passionate and relentless, the financial success will follow.

It's summer! What's your current theme song?

Major Lazer- Light It Up!

Thank you, Branka!

Woman Crush Wednesday - Lauren Berkovitz

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

Lauren B.  The B stands for Berkovitz -- my last name. I am from the East coast originally; born in Boston, and raised in a very small town in Rhode Island. I have lived in California now for nine years. I am the Founder and CEO of Lauren B. Beauty, and VP of Philip B. Botanicals.

Do you have a favorite aspect of your job?

I LOVE what I do every day! The Beauty industry is such a cool industry to be involved in.  I am excited to wake up every day and rush to work. I wake up with tons of new ideas and energy (most days) and can't wait to get in to put them into practice. I love being able to work with people, and creating remarkable products that are changing the footprint of the beauty industry. I love working with different customers and types of people all over the world: from customers, to distributors, to regulatory agencies and everyone in between. Learning about different cultures is fascinating; visiting customers in their element is also life changing. I equally love formulating products. When I get an idea I run with it, and have created some of my favorite products and colors that way with an idea and goal, and no restrictions.

What does self-care mean to you?

This sounds cliché but I feel that self-care and beauty really starts from the inside. It is not only physical to me, but more of how a person feels and treats their mind, body, and soul. It’s all encompassing. People that are beautiful on the inside and who practice self-care are more beautiful on the outside in my opinion!

Care to share your morning routine?

-I wake up around 5:00am and head to the gym for my morning workout (I currently am obsessed with Orange Theory Fitness and take their classes 3-4 times a week). I workout for 60 min.

-Come home and have a healthy breakfast, either a protein shake or poached egg and avocado.

-Shower with my favorite beauty products, embark on a very basic beauty routine, and get ready for the day.

-I am normally at the office by 8:30 - 9:00am-ish ...and ready to conquer the world hehe :)

Must-have beauty products:

ALWAYS polished nails, and manicured hands and cuticles. The perfect first impression is more than just polish, but the whole appearance of your hands and nails…hence the perfect Lauren B Manicure. Philip B is my lifesaver for everything hair, the perfect treatment shampoos & Conditioners all the way down to my styling aids. Jet Set hair spray, I can't live without. My favorite drugstore beauty buy is Neutrogena makeup remover pads and oil absorbing sheets.

One beauty item you can’t leave home without?

I can't chose only one... I can't live without my Lauren B Hand Scrub- I use it twice a day because I am legitimately addicted to it.  My Nail and cuticle balm are a close second, and my Philip B. Jet Set Hair Spray.

It's summer! What's your current theme song?

Sia- Cheap Thrills.  It’s currently stuck in my head.

Thank you, Lauren!
